This term, we continue to paint from life in my intermediate oil painting class; which is customized for you. My goal is to build your tool kit as an artist. Our lessons this term will emphasize color harmony while we continue to discuss design, hierarchies of value, edges, temperature. I have a number of students who continue from class session to class session with me. Every week, I pose a particular problem; then assist my students in designing their still life, or in choosing their landscape subject to address the week's problem/lesson. Recently, I gathered red, yellow, and blue objects and cloths, separated them into three groupings by color, and had the students choose their still life props from only one of the groups. We had a great discussion of warm and cools within the same color family; and they arranged fascinating setups. The resulting discussion was one of harmony; design elements, and seeing accurately.
Teaching is a joy; each week I work hard to redefine the bar and to push it up a little. Each week my students surprise and gratify me by listening, working hard, and meeting the bar.... sometimes by grazing; sometimes slamming up against it; sometimes breaking beyond.
